The drive up to Kuruman was probably the most daunting as there wasn't a lot to see. Most of the towns up to there was riddled with trash and broken roads. We did, however, have a surprisingly good breakfast at Mam's Foods in Vryburg. It was well priced, and the coffee was strong enough to wake me up for the next stretch of our journey.
From Kuruman up to Upington I got flashbacks of the road between Graaff-Reinet and Willowmore. Initially I was taken aback by the openness, but it got rather repetitive. The cruise control on the Fortuner wasn't really helping with the excitement.
I will admit, I was picturing the road after Upington as being a vast expanse of nothingness, but was completely flabbergasted by the wine farms and the beauty of the area. Next time I will make sure to spend a few more days in the area before moving into Namibia.
We arrived at Augrabies Falls Lodge, the sound of a shebeen pumping out loud music ringing from the entrance. This coupled with such a long day of driving, we weren't expecting much, but we had such a pleasant stay. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly, and it was nice and quite at night. We decided to eat at the Quivertree in the Augrabies park, but in hindsight we should have eaten Augrabies Falls Lodge. The food looked much better.
The Augrabies falls, like most Sanparks run reserves was clean and well run. The staff were super friendly. The food at the restaurant was a little expensive and the pineapple on my burger was a bit off, but a decent meal nonetheless. We bought 2 bottles of Muscadel from the Augrabies falls shop, but I would suggest rather buying that in Namibia as its a lot cheaper over there.
The falls were a little dry |
The area was still quite stunning |
